A Course in Miracles, or ACIM, is a self-study curriculum for retraining the mind. It is spiritual, not religious, in its teachings. Although Christian in language, it reflects universal spiritual themes. Its underlying ontology, or view of reality, is reminiscent of ancient refrains that echo throughout the world’s most hallowed traditions.

A new edition of the modern spiritual classic. For the first time, the complete and annotated text of A Course in Miracles is available in one volume. This new edition includes all the original handwritten notes of Helen Schucman. The volume also contains extensive footnotes clarifying challenging passages, and an appendix of 33 cameo essays outlining practical applications of the Course’s principles.

While the theoretical foundation provided by the course’s text is indispensable, it is only through doing the 365 daily exercises in the Workbook that true transformation is possible. The text alone is not enough to change a person’s perception.

Many ACIM students and teachers do not realize that there are actually several versions of the Course’s text, with some substantial editing. The version of the Course that most people are familiar with is the FIP version, which was published in 1992. This website offers a version of the text that is closer to the original and contains some material that was removed from the FIP version. Workbook for Students

A Course in Miracles, or ACIM, is a self-study educational program that teaches the retraining of the mind. It has been a spiritual life-changer for millions of people around the world. Although Christian in statement, it offers universal spiritual teachings. It focuses on experience rather than theory, and emphasizes forgiveness as the way to peace. It is the world’s most popular nonsectarian spiritual work, and has inspired many books and materials that have evolved from it.

The book consists of three parts: the Text, the Workbook, and the Manual for Teachers. The Text sets out the principles on which the whole Course is based, while the Workbook contains 365 lessons -- one for each day of the year - designed to help shift your perceptions. The Manual provides answers to questions that may arise during the study of the Workbook, and clarifies the terms used in the Course’s thought system.

As with the Text, some of the ideas in the Workbook may seem startling or difficult to believe. This does not matter, however, because you are not asked to judge them. You are simply asked to apply them, which will reveal their truth to you. Some of the Workbook lessons are very short, and others are quite lengthy. However, the overall effect is to bring you closer to the experience of love's presence in your life.

This edition of A Course in Miracles includes the complete unabridged Text volume as completed by Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford in 1972, before substantial editing by other editors. The original text has been carefully restored to its intended form, and is presented in its natural sequence. In addition, this edition includes extensive footnotes to clarify challenging passages, plus a comprehensive appendix of 33 cameo essays that outline ways to apply the Course's teachings in daily life.

This is a faithful reproduction of the original 1972 manuscript, in its all-caps rendition of emphasized words, as well as a few misspellings and other minor errors. Despite these limitations, this version is remarkably clear and accurate, and is close to the dictation that Helen Schucman received.

Manual for Teachers

The manual for teachers of A Course in Miracles is the third part of this modern spiritual classic. This book is designed to help students of the Course become teachers themselves. It contains detailed instructions for teaching the principles of the Course to others. According to the Manual for Teachers, this is the only way that the principles of the Course can be fully enthroned in the mind. The other methods of promoting the Course, such as study and practice, are only thought-reinforcement mechanisms.

The Course is not a religion and its ideas are not dogmatic. It is a set of philosophies and beliefs that are spiritually inspired and highly intellectual in nature. Its use of poetic language and blank verse, as well as its complex metaphysical, theological, and psychological concepts, have led some people to compare it with some of the world’s great literature. The Course is also unique in its approach to achieving forgiveness, which is more than a mere shift in perception.

It is this shift that has brought the Course to the attention of millions of people around the world and has changed their lives forever. The three volumes of the Course, which were received through a process of inner dictation by Helen Schucman beginning in 1965, have been read and studied by people from every religious tradition, background, and profession. Its popularity continues to grow with each year.

While the Course is a self-study program, it is often studied in groups. These groups are called study groups or classes and meet on a regular basis to discuss the Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers. The Study Groups are facilitated by trained volunteers who assist with the reading, discussion, and understanding of the material.

This new edition of A Course in Miracles contains a 669-page Text, the theoretical foundation for its thought system; a 488-page Workbook for Students, containing 365 daily lessons for training the mind; and a 92-page Manual for Teachers, which contains answers to questions that may arise while studying the course. It also includes extensive footnotes and an appendix of 33 cameo essays that provide a clearer understanding of difficult passages.

A Course in Miracles is a spiritual classic that has changed the lives of millions of people around the world. It all began in 1965 when Helen Schucman heard a voice in her mind that sparked the writing of this modern spiritual masterpiece. Over the next seven years, she took down 1,500 typewritten pages that would become this book. Then she and her colleague William Thetford edited the completed transcription into what we now call A Course in Miracles.

During the editing process, Jesus told Helen and Bill to make the course as universal as possible. This led to the elimination of a huge amount of material that was personal or specific to Helen and Bill. It also influenced the way they used citations and references. The early portions of the Course tend to be very choppy and focused on Helen and Bill’s personal experience and professional background, such as their relationships with one another and their interaction with other miracle workers. The early portion of the Course is also more conversational in tone than the later sections.

In order to make the early parts of the Course read more like the later portions, a lot of the personal and professional material was removed. They were also rearranged in their sequence, and the flow of thought was smoothed out. In addition, a great deal of the scribal errors were corrected on a line-by-line basis.

The result was that a very different edition of the Course emerged, called the Hugh Lynn Cayce version and now the Urtext. This edition did not include chapter and section breaks in the Text, or capitalization, punctuation, and paragraphing as we have in the published Course. It is still readable, however, and contains most of the material that was left out of the published Course.
