A Course in Miracles on Healing
A Course in Miracles on Healing

In a course in miracles, healing is viewed as replacing fear with love. While the world believes in many different types of sickness and remedies for it, ACIM emphasizes that the body and its symptoms are illusory.

It is the teachers’ function to help patients understand this. This requires understanding the basic differences between the Course’s and the world’s views on where sickness and healing occur.

What is a miracle?

A miracle is an event that defies the ordinary laws of nature and appears to be caused by supernatural means. The existence of miracles is an issue of great philosophical significance. The debate over miracles has often been framed in terms of whether they constitute evidence for the existence of God. A key element of the argument is that a miracle is an event that cannot be explained in terms of natural causes and therefore must be a divine act. This premise has led to heated debates over the definition of a miracle.

Many philosophers have proposed different ways to define a miracle. David Hume famously argued that a miracle must be a violation of the laws of nature. This definition has been the subject of much discussion, as it raises the bar for what might be considered a miracle and makes it more difficult to determine whether or not an event meets this criteria.

More recently, scholars have argued that miracles can be defined in a more general way, such as by describing an event that is not explained by current scientific knowledge or that defies the usual laws of nature. While this definition is more general than the law-violation definition, it still raises some important questions about the nature of miracles.

One of the central issues in this debate is what exactly is meant by “natural law.” Natural law refers to a set of principles that dictate how things should work in the universe. Natural laws are generally thought to be consistent with the overall order and harmony of the universe, so a miracle that violates these rules would be a significant break in this pattern. Some philosophers have argued that a miracle must be able to be verified by empirical methods, while others have argued that it should be a profoundly unusual event that evokes wonder in the community of believers.

In the Course in Miracles, a miracle is defined as an event that removes the belief of separation from God within the mind. This is a completely different concept of healing than the world’s view of sickness and healing. The world sees that there is one form of sickness and many forms of healing, while the Course teaches that there is only one form of sickness (the belief in separation) and that there is only one remedy for it (true forgiveness).

What is the purpose of a miracle?

As a supernatural event that defies the natural laws of this world, miracles are meant to showcase God’s power. Miracles also serve to authenticate the divine commission and message of those who proclaim it. When a miracle happens, it is often accompanied by a change of heart and mind and the ability to be healed from sickness.

The Bible reveals the miraculous events that have been part of redemptive history, including the creation and the parting of the Red Sea. But miracles have also been seen in the healing of people with illnesses and disabilities, as well as natural events that could not be explained in any other way, such as a rainbow in the sky.

Skeptics may scoff at the idea of miracles, but for those who believe in a spiritual realm and especially Christians, miracles are amazing circumstances that definitively point to the existence and power of God. Jesus himself referred to miracles as signs that prove his divinity. He told his followers that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed, they could say to a mountain, “move from here to there,” and it would move.

Many people have claimed miracles, but many of these are not biblically authenticated. Those who practice Christian Science, Mormonism, Catholicism, Transcendental Meditation, Yoga and New Age Crystal Healing claim healing miracles. These alleged miracles are not the same as those performed by Jesus.

In the case of Jesus’ miracles and those of the apostolic age, they were always performed for a worthy purpose. They served to prove that the evangelist was indeed sent by God, and that the message he preached was truthful. They were not used for self-aggrandizement or wealth, like some modern-day faith healers do.

Miracles are a sign of God’s presence and power, as well as the fact that He still cares about us. For this reason, it’s important for believers to pray for miracles and to trust that God will respond to them. He has a plan for each of us, and miracles are just one aspect of that.

How can a miracle be worked?

Many people who are sick believe that they have to have faith in order for God to work a miracle. They are not sure exactly what that faith is, but they know that it must be strong enough to overcome the obstacles that arise. They also know that they must ask for a miracle from the right place, and in the proper way.

What is meant by “a miracle” in this context is that there must be a change in perception, or in one’s view of the world and its contents. A Course in Miracles views the world as an illusion, which means that the multitude of different illnesses and treatments seen in the world are all illusory too. However, this does not mean that you should not try to find help in the world that works for your illness; all that is important from the Course’s perspective is that you remember that what is ill in your body is really only a thought in your mind.

For this reason, the goal of the Course is not healing of the body or of any other physical problem; it is the healing of the mind. A miracle is a special change in perception, and when it occurs, your relationship with the world changes as well. As you practice the Course, you learn to question every value that the ego holds, and as you do so you begin to see the world differently.

Another aspect of a miracle is that it is a direct result of the Atonement. The Atonement is Jesus’ gift to his followers, and when you accept it, you receive all of the blessings that come with it. Blessings are God’s power flowing through natural channels, and they can often be more effective in overcoming a crisis situation than a miracle.

As you continue to work with the Course, you will learn that healing is not a goal of the world, but rather the healing of the mind. This is why the Course emphasizes forgiveness as a means of bringing miracles into the world. If you are willing to practice forgiveness, the miracles that will come will demonstrate God’s love and power to you.

How can a miracle be experienced?

If you are looking to experience a miracle in healing, you need to learn to view sickness and physical pain differently. This means shifting your focus away from the bodily symptoms and focusing on what is going on in your mind. The key to this is forgiveness. Forgiveness is the only way to release the fear that drives all perceived sickness and suffering. This is why ACIM emphasizes the importance of practicing forgiveness daily.

The Course teaches that healing only occurs in the mind and that all forms of sickness are simply different variations of the same thing: the belief in separation from God. Once this is understood, it becomes clear that there can be only one cure for the disease of separation and that the practice of forgiveness is the way to heal it.

Because the world is an illusion, it may seem that there are many different ways to help or treat a sickness in this physical world. However, this doesn’t mean that the Course doesn’t support any type of worldly help or treatment. It just means that when it comes to the physical world, it is important to remember that everything is illusory and therefore it really does not matter what form of help or treatment you choose in the world. It only matters if you continue to practice forgiveness daily.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t take a medication or go to a doctor when you are sick. It just means that when you are sick, you need to remember that all the things that appear to be happening in the physical world are illusory and it is important to shift your attention back to your mind so you can see what is really going on.

In fact, the most effective and profound healing method recommended by the Course is to simply use the power of forgiveness on a daily basis in order to release the fear that is driving all sickness and suffering. This is how you will begin to experience a miracle in healing. It is the only way to free yourself from your ego and discover that you are truly worthy of being loved and healed.
